Martin Short was motivated by his mother to participate in creative activities. He completed his schooling at Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton and completed his graduation from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1971 with a BA degree in social work. His mother died in 1968 after a long battle with cancer, and his dad died in 1970 from a stroke.

His brother, Michael Short, is also an artist and has won an Emmy Award three times for comedy sketch writing.
