Oscar-Winning Screenwriter David Seidler Passes Away At 86

The King’s Speech writer died on Saturday at 86. His manager Jeff Aghassi confirmed that Seidler died in New Zealand.

As reported by THR, Aghassi said,

David was in the place he loved most in the world — New Zealand — doing what gave him the greatest peace, which was fly-fishing.

If given the chance, it is exactly as he would have scripted it.

Seidler was most renowned for his achievement in the 2010 historical drama The King’s Speech. Directed by Tom Hooper, the movie included a cast of Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, among others.

It received critical praise and performed quite well at the box office. The movie helped David Seidler earn an Oscar for his screenwriting.

Colin Firth also received his first Academy Award for his acting in the movie. After being nominated in 12 major categories, The King’s Speech grabbed four wins, including Best Picture at the 83rd Academy Awards.

Seidler was also responsible for the stage adaptation of the movie, performed at Wyndham’s Theatre on London’s West End in 2012. Further, the stage version has been adapted into more than six languages, and its Broadway journey was halted in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Not being limited to his talent, Seidler has written many movies and TV shows. His notable works are Onassis: The Richest Man in the World, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, Whose Child Is This? The War for Baby Jessica, Dancing in the Dark, Come On, Get Happy: The Partridge Family Story, and By Dawn’s Early Light.

He also wrote some of the episodes for Adventures of the Seaspray, Days of Our Lives, Another World, General Hospital, The Wonderful World of Disney, and Son of the Dragon, among others.
