About Allen Iverson
Basketball player Allen Iverson was born in Hampton, Virginia, to his single 15-year-old mother Ann Iverson. His father Allen Broughton left them, so he was given his mother’s maiden name. As a child, Iverson was nicknamed “Bubba Chuck” and was known for looking out for younger kids. His father figure Michael Freeman was arrested for drug dealing in front of Iverson when he was 13. Iverson failed the eighth grade and moved out of the projects.
At Bethel High School, Iverson played football and basketball. He started as quarterback, running back, kick returner, and defensive back for the football team. He also played point guard for the basketball team. Allen Iverson’s Basketball Career
Allen Iverson briefly attended Georgetown University before the Philadelphia 76ers drafted him in 1996. He became an 11-time NBA all-star and one of the greatest point guards of all time. However, Iverson was a controversial player both on and off the court.
John Thompson, Georgetown University’s head coach, recruited Iverson straight from a Virginia jail cell. Iverson had been arrested for his involvement in a bar fight and faced a lengthy prison term. Thompson intervened and convinced a judge to release Iverson into his custody. Iverson agreed to attend Georgetown, play basketball, and graduate. But he left Georgetown early against Thompson’s wishes and began a successful career as an NBA point guard.
In 1999, Iverson led the 76ers to their first playoff appearance. He started in all ten playoff games before losing to the Indiana Pacers in the second round. Before the next season began, Allen signed a six-year, $70 million contract extension. However, in the 2000 offseason, the 76ers tried to trade Iverson after his numerous arguments with coach Larry Brown. The deal fell through, and Iverson led the team to the finals in 2001, where he was named Most Valuable Player.
After playing with the 76ers for ten years, Iverson was traded to the Denver Nuggets. In 2003, Iverson and Allen were part of Team USA for the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico.
