A latest Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman suggests that Apple and Google could join hands to bring the features of Gemini AI into iPhones. Notably, if this deal happens, it could bring Gemini into a positive light, as controversies for the last few months have surrounded it.
Citing some anonymous sources, Gurman stated,
The two companies are in active negotiations to let Apple license Gemini, Google’s set of generative AI models, to power some new features coming to the iPhone software this year.
Interestingly, Apple has been in talks about introducing several AI features to the upcoming iOS 18 operating system with the help of its own artificial intelligence models. Now, with this reported deal, it could emphasize the features on the iPhone itself rather than being provided from the cloud.
This Gemini AI-related deal could bring generative AI features to Apple devices, like image generation and essay writing, with the help of a single prompt. Reportedly, apps such as Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote will have in-built generative AI features with the iOS 18 update.
Nonetheless, the latest negotiation reports suggest that Apple is falling short in developing its own artificial intelligence models.
During a call with analysts earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said,
Let me just say that I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with Gen AI and AI, without getting into more details and getting out in front of myself.
The Bloomberg report mentions that Apple’s AI development is still unable to compete with the models of Google and others in the industry.
While the discussion between Apple and Google remains active, any confirmation is not expected until June. Apple usually announces any significant updates at its Worldwide Developers Conference.
Besides, Apple could also leverage generative AI from any other company, such as OpenAI.
