Disney’s Searchlight Pictures is all set to bring a remake of the 1989 classic movie, The War of the Roses. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in “The Roses.”
The movie is still under development and directed by Jay Roach, the comedy director renowned for Recount and Bombshell. Not only this, it will be written by Tony McNamara, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Searchlight’s hit movie Poor Things.
The script for The Roses will be based on the 1981 novel by Warren Adler.
The original movie, which came out more than three decades ago, received acclaim during that time. It starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the lead roles. Now, its remake will star Oscar-nominated Marvel Cinematic Universe actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and Olivia Colman (Secret Invasion). Notably, Colman received the Academy Award for Best Actress for the 2018 movie The Favourite.

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.

Cumberbatch is producing the movie under his production banner, SunnyMarch. Alongside, Olivia Colman will also produce the movie under the South of the River banner.
What was The War of the Roses about?
The War of the Roses, directed by Danny DeVito, follows the story of a couple, Oliver and Barbara Rose. At first, the couple seemed to be living a perfect life. However, when the wife comprehends that she is no longer in love with her husband, the divorce proceedings begin. Then, it takes ugly turns as both of them start to humiliate each other. Cumberbatch and Colman will now play these roles.
