How to Successfully Open a Medical Clinic

How to Successfully Open a Medical Clinic

Sometimes, when you work in the medical industry, you want to make as much of a difference as you can to those in need around you. And, while working in any medical establishment is doing exactly that, you may have been thinking about opening your own practice so that you can make even more of a difference in your area. If you’re thinking of opening up your own surgery, there’s more to it than opening your doors and waiting for patients to arrive. You’re probably already thinking about hiring medical professionals and which pieces of equipment you need, but there are other things you need to keep in mind so that you can treat patients correctly and effectively. Let’s take a look at those now.

Run background checks on staff members

While this might seem like an obvious step for the professionals that are going to be treating patients, you’ll also have other members of staff, such as administrators, that you’ll need to bring on board. We’ve all heard horror stories about clinics hiring people that have been charged with crimes that could endanger your patients, so it’s important to make sure you run background checks on all of your staff members. The last thing you want is for your clinic to have a bad reputation before it’s even really started.

Make sure you’re compliant with patient information

When a patient visits you, they expect their personal records to be kept private at all times. This means that you’ll need to make sure you handle all patient information with the greatest of care. This will include getting confidential shredding services for any paperwork that’s been scanned onto their files and no longer needed, and also putting into place hipaa compliant ehr software to protect documents that are digital. If a patient’s information gets leaked, not only could they sue you, but your reputation could again be ruined and you may lose all of your patients.

Provide refreshments

No matter what kind of clinic you run, there’s always going to be angst from some patients. It might be because they’re in pain or feeling unwell, or it might even be a classic case of white coat syndrome. Either way, you want to make sure your patients are as comfortable as possible to make the whole experience much less daunting. You should make sure there’s a water cooler available for people to grab a drink, and you could even consider leaving plain and non-sugary snacks around for people to enjoy while they’re waiting to be seen. The nicer you make the experience, the calmer your patient will be when they are called into their appointment.

Put yourself in your patient’s shoes

Finally, when it comes to creating a service with a great atmosphere and great staff, it’s important to put yourself into your patient’s shoes. What would you expect to see? How could it be better? Are your staff friendly enough? Ask all of these questions and more and then make those improvements.

It’s not an easy task opening and successfully running a medical clinic, but it’s definitely doable. While this list is nowhere near exhaustive, it’s a great start to help you start your journey.
