The first trailer for the game was released at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020. It showed how the characters of games interact with each other, along with occasional peeks into the game world, known as the living lands. It focuses on the pursuit of the main character to stop an epidemic in the living lands. They uncover many secrets and mysteries on their journey. The players will be able to use various kinds of spells to defeat their enemies. However, it should be utilized carefully, and enemies should be targeted thoughtfully. The Living Lands world is full of magic, monsters, weapons, and shields. This first-person role-playing game gives players old-school experience as they investigate what is going on in the living lands and go on a mission for the kingdom of Aedyr.

Feargus Urquhart, the CEO of Obsidian Games, said in a conversation with PC Gamer, “We could go off and create an 8km x 8km open world and then deal with all the consequences of that—because that makes it a different style game.” Urquhart added, “But we want to tell more confined stories that the player can experience with their companions, and then move from part of the world to part of the world.”

Along with that, Carrie Patel, the director of Avowed, also said, “One thing we wanted to do with Avowed was make sure the companions felt really integral to the story.” Patel added, “In some games, they’re optionally recruitable, but in Avowed they’re deeply tied to the story, tied to your party… we really wanted to create this sense that you’re in this big wild frontier, you’re going on this adventure of discovery, and you have this small but tight-knit crew with you.”
