About Phil Mickelson

Philip Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California, to parents Philip Mickelson and Mary Santos. His father was an airline pilot and former naval aviator, and his maternal grandfather, Alfred Santos, was a caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links who introduced Phil to golf as a child. Even though he is right-handed, he learned to play golf left-handed by watching his father swing.

Under his father’s instruction, Mickelson began playing golf before he started school. They played together several times a week thanks to Phil Sr.’s work schedule as a commercial pilot. Young Phil practiced his creative short game in a practice area in their backyard in San Diego. He graduated from the University of San Diego High School in 1988 after spending his childhood in San Diego and Scottsdale, Arizona. Mickelson has ancestry from Portugal, Sweden, and Sicily.
