Troll has quietly become a roaring success for Netflix. The Norwegian disaster fantasy film, directed by Roar Uthaug, introduced audiences to the intriguing world of Norwegian folklore and left us hanging with tantalizing hints of what might come next.
On September 19th, 2023, it was confirmed that director Roar Uthaug is set to return to helm the sequel. Writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud are also on board. Production is probably set to kick off in 2024. A late 2024 or early 2025 release may be on the cards.
The production company behind the movie, Motion Blur, remains unaffected by the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. The entire production process is local to Norway. Hence, we can expect a pretty unhindered flow from filming to distribution.

Shortly after ‘Troll’ hit screens in December 2022, the director and producers teased the possibility of more stories set in this universe. So, the sequel was not a total surprise. In fact, there might be more than one sequel. “This has been a great collaboration with Roar and Netflix, and we’d love to do it again” the director had said.
‘Troll’ still holds the title of Netflix’s biggest non-English language movie in history. The film has topped viewing charts, both in terms of the newer 91-day metric and the older 28-day metric. In its first 91 days on the streaming platform, ‘Troll’ clocked an impressive 178.6 million watch hours, equivalent to 103 million completed viewings.
The film took viewers on an adventurous journey across Norway, where military and scientific minds grappled with the existence of awakened trolls. The gripping film ended with an enigmatic scene and some questions that the sequel, Troll 2, might be able to answer. It’s clear that the enchanting and suspenseful world of Norwegian trolls will continue to captivate audiences around the globe.
