Babylon Berlin is a German television series loosely based on Volker Kutscher’s novels. Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Hendrik Handloegten created, wrote, and directed it. It first appeared on October 13, 2017, on the German-language entertainment channel Sky 1. The first eight out of the sixteen episodes were known as Season 1, while the other half was known as Season 2. The second run had 16 episodes, known as season 3, and was out on Sky 1 on January 24, 2020. Moreover, its fourth season, which had 12 episodes, premiered on October 8, 2022. In June 2023, the series received a renewal for a fifth season.
Fans were skeptical whether the fourth season would be the last. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the producers of the series were convinced of its renewal because of the massive international success of the series, which had received more than 55 million digital views. “ARD Degeto, X Filme and Beta Film [have commissioned] the development of the fifth season of the international hit series Babylon Berlin,” they reported.
What is the Plot of Babylon Berlin?
Set in late 1920s Berlin, the series revolves around a police inspector from Cologne who transfers to Berlin to solve a case involving an extortion ring run by the Berlin mafia. It might look simple at first; however, the case takes serious turns and impacts the lives of Gereon Rath, along with his closest associates Bruno Walter and Charlotte Ritter. The three of them get in between drug dealing and weapon trafficking crimes. Rath wrestles with the decision to unravel the crime or remain loyal to his friends. It is unclear whether anyone is his friend or enemy.
The synopsis of the series earlier read, “Beneath the decadence of 1929 Berlin lies an underworld city of sin. Police investigator Gareon Rath has been transferred from Cologne to the epicenter of political and social changes in the Golden Twenties.”
