Will There Be An Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2? Everything You Need To Know

Will There Be An Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2? Everything You Need To Know

Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the most exciting miniseries on Disney+ in 2022. The series followed the iconic Jedi Master as he set on a mission to save Leia. He escaped the Imperial Inquisitors and his arch-nemesis Darth Vader. After rescuing Leia Organa and saving Luke Skywalker, he fought a mighty battle against Vader. Thereafter, Obi-Wan Kenobi came to his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, to learn some secret art. The series ended on this cliffhanger, and ever since then, fans have been waiting patiently to learn if Kenobi became the Force Ghost.

Now the series director has come forward with a positive update about the future of the series. There was much doubt about the possibility of a season 2 for the series. However, last week the series director Deborah Chow said something that has filled the fans with hope.

Hopeful Update for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2

Deborah Chow had previously explained that Obi-Wan Kenobi was “always conceived of as a limited” series and will not have a second season. However, the actors were not resolved to let the matter rest and have been campaigning for the continuation of the series. Vivien Lyra Blair, who portrayed young Princess Leia, spoke of her willingness to come back for another season. She also said, “Ewan is just begging to do another one. He’s really excited”. Actor Ewan McGregor came out of his retirement to play the title character to perfection. But now he cannot imagine leaving the role behind after just one season. McGregor has shown his enthusiasm and even “pitched ideas” about the story for season 2.

In an interview, director Deborah Chow agreed with the fans’ assessment that season 1 ended on an anticlimactic note. She continued that actor Ewan McGregor is impatient to bring the story to an end and has been sending her his thoughts about the trajectory of the story. However, the director said that she still has 10 years’ worth of story left to tell and that fans should prepare for a long and exciting journey ahead. In the midst of this, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is “not in active development”. The company is instead pooling its resources to create a movie based on the ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ game. But Kennedy did not dismiss the possibility of Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, saying, “there’s always the possibility“.

Will There Be An Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

As of today, it is still unclear if the series will be renewed for a second season. But as Deborah Chow said, there are plenty of years left for the Jedi master’s story to come to an end. Ewan McGregor has also pushed for the second season, saying both he and Hayden Christensen are ready to come back to the studio whenever the opportunity arises. The biggest obstacle on the path to a second season is the unwillingness of Disney+ to commit to another season.

According to insider sources, Disney has changed its marketing and streaming strategy since Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 came out in 2022. Last year Disney was heavily investing in its streaming ventures, as a result of which they jointly worked on the Kenobi venture with Lucasfilm. But in 2023, the media streaming giant is focusing its attention on the big screens. This shift is mainly due to the big business that some movies did in the previous year. Moreover, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series demands a lot of funds which the company does not want to allocate to streaming. However, as Kathleen Kennedy said, “never say never;” it is possible that Disney may revisit the idea of expanding the Kenobi venture to another season. However, fans will have to wait for official confirmation from Lucasfilm or Disney before getting their hopes up for a Kenobi Season 2.
