Abiding by his family’s traditions, Bryan became an active-duty member of the United States Navy. Starting at the age of 17, he worked there for eight years. Nevertheless, he started writing songs at the age of 14 and worked on music during his spare time in the Navy. After eight years, when he was 25, he finished his service.

He first uploaded his music to YouTube in 2017, with the video being recorded on an iPhone. He uploaded many similar tracks during his time in the Navy. On September 7, 2023, Zach Bryan was arrested by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for obstruction in Vinita, Oklahoma. The singer shared the whole matter with his fans through social media. 

Firstly, he was pulled over for speeding. When the cop asked him for his address, he declined to share it, considering his stardom. Even though he repeatedly said that he was a musician, the officer put him in handcuffs. However, it all worked out once he gave his address to the police. 

The next day, Bryan and his security guard were going to Boston when his bodyguard was pulled over in Vinita. When he stopped the car to smoke, an officer told him not to come out of his vehicle; otherwise, he would be arrested. This made Bryan angry; he was in handcuffs in the patrol vehicle. The officer tried to work it out, but his anger made him go to jail. Zach Bryan spent some time in the Craig County jail before he got bail.

He posted on X on September 8, 2023, about the incident.
